One Lap Of America SSGT2 Win

Rick Potter/George Samuels Win the SSGT2 Class in the 2001 One Lap Of America Race

May 11, 2001

Rick Potter and George Samuels recently completed their defense of the SSGT2 class championship in the 2001 One Lap Of America (OLOA) Race.  With sponsorship from Peter Farrell Supercars, R.G.Potter Consulting and Kingston Online Services,  they piloted their 1993 Mazda RX-7 to a class victory and a 4rth overall finishing position.

In the 2000 One Lap of America, Rick Potter and George Samuels took a PFS-modified, twin-turbo RX-7 to a first-ever GT/2 class win. Based on their assessment of the competition and the competition's dark promises of what they would do to upgrade their cars for 2001, Rick and George agreed that something more would be necessary to be competitive in 2001.

As Dr. Seuss would say, "They sat and they thought, and they thought and they sat." Both are very good at sitting; the thinking comes a bit harder. Their first thought was to add a 20B to Rick's third gen. A thorough review of their combined racing budgets showed that they had total resources in the neighborhood of $.37 (U.S.) or about 1/100,000th of the necessary capital. The first thought was tabled.

Their second thought was to convert Rick's car to a single-turbo configuration. While it wouldn't have as much torque, the "bang for the buck" factor was far more reasonable. This simple change in design requirements doubled the percentage of money available for the project. Unfortunately, the actual dollar amount remained depressingly stable.

As Rick and George dutifully polled rich, elderly relatives on their anticipated date of demise, Peter Farrell entered the picture. Looking for a venue in which to showcase his single-turbo conversion expertise, Peter suggested the idea of converting Rick's car for the 2001 One Lap. Rick's chiropractor has assured him of eventual recovery provided that he desist from doing further cartwheels.

That brings us to the 2001 PFS One Lap of America Single-Turbo Project Car. Building an almighty, snap-your-neck single-turbo car is not too difficult. However, building one that will compete successfully on a variety of tracks while retaining normal drivability and comfort for thousands of miles on the public roads is a bit more of a challenge. Building one that will be reliable under a variety of uses and happy on whatever fuel is available is harder still. Peter recommended using a Garrett-based PFS hybrid turbocharger kit, since it would have better response under road-race conditions than the larger T78. This allowed a very achievable and reliable 15 psi boost that would be happy with readily-available pump fuel, while giving us 488 hp for dealing with our competitor's upgrades. With engine management from Electromotive, the project has met all of its goals for drivability, reliability and bushels of horsepower.

David Lane agreed to post daily updates of the One Lap adventures of the Rick and George to the RX-7 mailing list. They will be echoed to this page for people who would like to follow the action in the 2001 One Lap of America.
